Oakland Animal Services handles over 6,000 animals per year and many of these animals spend time living within the Shelter. With 247 cages, we can house over 300 animals at a time. The animals that we shelter come from all over Oakland and for many different reasons. We take surrendered, injured, stray, quarantined, and protective custody animals. Since we pick up and take stray animals, the Shelter is the place to go if you have lost your animal in Oakland. We also manage the rabies control program for Oakland by making sure that every dog in Oakland that is 4 months or older has a rabies vaccination and a license to prove it.
