How to Volunteer
Volunteers are an important part of the work we do at Oakland Animal Services. Thank you for your interest. Please read the following before signing up for Orientation.
Please note that we will not accept any summer-only volunteers except for those officially registered for our internship program. Click here for details.
- Volunteer Orientation (approx. 1 hour). Volunteer orientations are held at the Oakland Animal Services shelter at 1101 29th Ave. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
- Complete Online Training (approx. 2 hours). Go to www.4act.com. You will get your login/password at the volunteer orientation. Complete “Basics of Volunteering” and the animal section. You must pass the quizzes with 85% or better.
- Complete several training sessions which will progressively add required skills to be able to volunteer in the chosen animal specialty. For dogs, complete Dog Training 1, Dog Training 2, Dog Training 3. For cats, complete Cat Training 1, Cat Training 2, Cat Training 3. For rabbits, complete Rabbit Training, Rabbit Practice. After you have completed Training Session 1, you need to sign up for the Adoption Counseling Workshop.
- Become an Official Volunteer (approx. 30 min.): When you have completed your training, you are ready to meet with the Volunteer Program Manager to discuss making you an official volunteer. Schedule an appointment here.
