Ways To Contribute

There are many ways you can contribute to Oakland Animal Services.  Our volunteer program is the backbone of the work we do at OAS.  With over 160 active volunteers, we are fortunate to have many knowledgeable and skilled people assisting us with the care of animals in the shelter.  However, working with animals isn’t the only way that you can help us.  We are always in need of other items and assistance in making the shelter run smoothly.  Below are a few of the other ways that people can assist.   Anyone wanting to volunteer or contribute to OAS should attend an OAS Orientation.

Animal Volunteers

Volunteers in our animal adoption programs exercise, socialize and assist with adoptions for animals that are available to adopt by the public.  These volunteers are skilled in animal handling and public outreach and communication.    Training is provided but prior experience and knowledge of animals is a plus!  All animal volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and be selected as a volunteer through our training program.

Phone Volunteers

We are in need of volunteers to assist with answering phones Monday-Friday from 9am-11am.  You will take messages and work with staff to assist members of the public with questions.   Training is provided.  A knowledge of answering a multi-line phone system is preferred.

Gardening Volunteers

Catio

Gardening volunteers assist by pulling weeds, planting flowers, raking leaves and general upkeep of parking lot and lawn areas.   Training is provided, but gardening experience is preferred!

Donation Drives

The animals at OAS are always in need of items to help make life more pleasant during their stay here.  Items such as blankets, towels and certain treats and toys are a welcome addition to the work we do with the animals here.  This type of activity is excellent for high school students, classroom projects, church groups or Boy or Girl Scouts looking to earn badges or experience helping animals.

Wish List

If you don’t have the time to volunteer your services or organize a donation drive, we have an ongoing Amazon Wish List that we can always use items from.

A special thanks goes out to volunteers who have contributed over 1,000 hours of their time.  These volunteers have gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping make OAS the successful place it is.  We couldn’t do it without you!
