Help Our Wishes Come True
We rely on donations of items that help to improve our animals’ quality of life and give our staff and volunteer teams the tools they need. We are in need of Friskies, Royal Canin Babycat food, chicken broth, Kongs, and many other supplies for our many cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and rabbits! We rely on donations from our Amazon wishlist for many of these items that keep our animals happy and healthy.
You can find our Amazon wish list here.
You can also donate other items or drop off donations directly at the shelter. Read about other ways to give.
It Takes a Village and We Thank You
Oakland Animal Services is currently operating a second (temporary) site in Oakland where over a hundred of our shelter dogs are being housed for several weeks due to exposure to canine influenza virus (CIV). We would like to thank everyone who has donated items for the CIV quarantine warehouse where all our dogs who were exposed to CIV at our shelter are currently being housed. From dog treats, to rolling carts, sharpies, paper towels, and so many other supplies, we and the dogs are so grateful for your donations and support.
Special shout out to Lisa Ryan and the folks at SCRAP, as well as the East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse for donating a whole bunch of sound dampening materials to help us with soundproofing the warehouse, so the dogs don’t get too stressed.
If you’d like to purchase treats. toys, or other supplies that help us care for our shelter dogs, visit our Amazon wishlist.
We have a tremendous need for volunteers at our warehouse location for various tasks. Some tasks require handling dogs, while other tasks do not require any experience with handling dogs. You do not need to complete our training program to volunteer at the facility. All instructions will be provided to you when you arrive at the facility to volunteer. Note that briefings occur at 8am and 1pm each day, so it would be best if you are available to arrive at one of those times. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, email volunteerprogram@oaklandca.gov.

Red, White & Blue – Free Adoptions Just for You!
For the entire month of July, Oakland Animal Services is waiving adoption fees for all of our adoptable animals! Come meet a new dog, cat, or bunny (or even a hamster!) to join your family.
If you’re thinking of welcoming a dog to your family, please note that the shelter currently has an outbreak of Canine Influenza Virus (CIV). CIV is treated with supportive care, and the best way for our dogs to recover is in a home environment. However, there are some restrictions on bringing a dog home. There must be no other dogs in the home, and you can only walk the dog in a private yard (no shared spaces or public areas) for four weeks. If you don’t have this space, you can still adopt a dog and OAS will be able to quarantine the pup for you. Please ask the OAS staff if you have any additional questions.
If you’re thinking you might want a kitty cat, consider some of our long-term residents. Or maybe even two cats. Take a look at some of our bonded pairs, cats who always have their best friend around.
If you’re thinking of adopting a cuddly bunny, you can view our available rabbits here. Adopting a rabbit is a long term-commitment! Pet rabbits live for 8-12 years and should live indoors with supervised outdoor time in a safe enclosed area. You can learn more about caring for a pet rabbit here.
Our standard adoption requirements will still apply, so please come prepared to meet all of the the requirements outlined here. Please note that if you are an Oakland resident, there will still be a $15 license fee for any dog that you adopt.
Bay Area Community, We Need Your Help!
Oakland Animal Services is experiencing an outbreak of the Canine Influenza Virus (CIV), aka the Canine flu. It is very contagious between dogs and can be deadly.
Due to the flu outbreak, we are in desperate need of dog foster homes where exposed dogs can be quarantined for up to four weeks. Who wouldn’t want an excuse to hang out with a pup and watch some Netflix for a few weeks?! Canine Influenza Virus is treated with supportive care, and the best way for our dogs to recover is in a home environment. The foster home cannot have any dogs due to risk of exposure. Additionally, the foster home must ensure that the dog remains strictly within their home and yard only (no shared or public places) for the full duration of the foster.
If you can help foster, please fill out our foster application here: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/foster
If you are interested in more information on fostering, please email OASFostering@gmail.com.
Special thanks to the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Shelter Medicine Program for helping out in this time of need: https://news.wisc.edu/uw-shelter-medicine-assists-with-cases-of-influenza-in-shelter-dogs/
More information on CIV can be found here: https://vetmed-hospitals.sites.medinfo.ufl.edu/files/2017/05/Info-for-Pet-Owners-on-Canine-Influenza-1.pdf
Consider talking to your veterinarian about getting the Canine Influenza Virus vaccination for your dog.
Two are better than one – adopt a pair of kitties today!
Have you thought about adopting a cat? Have you thought about two? We have some bonded pairs at the shelter who would love to meet you and find their furever homes.
Meet Wylie and Zazu
Wylie and Zazu are a lovely pair of 9 year olds who came from the same litter and have lived their whole life together. They’re a package deal, so if you’re looking for a bonded pair, look no further! Because Wylie and Zazu were declawed prior to coming to the shelter, they will need to be indoor-only for their own safety and should be the only cats in the home. To meet Wylie and Zazu, email cats@oaklandsanimals.org to set up an appointment.
You can learn more about Wylie here: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/animal-profile/?id=36859
You can learn more about Zazu here: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/animal-profile/?id=36860
Meet Becca and Bindi
Becca and Bindi are a gorgeous pair of calico sisters who are tightly bonded in the way that only sisters can be. They can also squabble like only sisters can, so we have them living in side-by-side condos at the moment so they can each have their space. These two gals have lived together in a home and we will send them home as a pair as well. To meet Becca and Bindi, email cats@oaklandsanimals.org to set up an appointment.
You can learn more about Becca here: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/animal-profile/?id=37022
You can learn more about Bindi here: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/animal-profile/?id=37023
Meet Polo and Pepe
Polo and Pepe are a darling bonded pair of gents looking for their new home together. Both soak up attention and pets but Pepe is more likely to demand love, while Polo will hang back a bit and wait for you to come to him. To meet these bonded boys email cats@oaklandsanimals.org to set up an appointment.

Live with a Queen! Help our sweet Queen recover from knee surgery
Don’t you want to live with a Queen? Please open your heart and home and give Queen a foster or furever home. Our regal lady has a hind leg injury, likely a torn cruciate ligament that will probably need TPLO surgery. We’d love to get her this surgery so she feels better, but we need a foster where Queen can live for about 3 months.
Queen is a SUPER sweet girl who seems to get along with other respectful dogs (although she will need to be separated/closely supervised around other dogs during recovery so that there is no romping around). She is about 4 years old, seems to be a medium energy dog, loves people, and enjoys a soft bed and a good bully stick.
A total staff and volunteer favorite, Queen loves everyone–and the feeling is mutual! You’d never know it from her loving demeanor, but this pittie girl, who only wants to climb into your lap (she doesn’t mind that it’s a little too small for her!), is in constant pain due to the torn ligament. She is currently getting painkillers for the pain, but without surgery, her condition will worsen, likely leading to arthritis and catastrophic injury to her leg. Friends of Oakland Animal Services will raise money for the surgery and aftercare, so all Queen needs from you is a loving home.
It would be ideal for Queen to go to her foster prior to surgery so that she could acclimate to the new environment before post-op recovery. The recovery is usually around 8 weeks with the first few weeks being crate rest (and lots of meds), the following weeks being building up from walking around the house to normal walks around the neighborhood.
If you can foster – or want to adopt – this truly sweet girl, please email OASFostering@gmail.com.
Friends of Oakland Animal Services is running a campaign to raise $6000 for Queen’s surgery, and we need your help! Please, donate to help this beautiful girl get the pain-free life she deserves! Any size gift will help! Donate at: www.crowdrise.com/queenfund.
This gift will not only heal Queen’s pain, it will give her the best possible chance of finding her forever family, which, sadly might otherwise be a long shot for a pit bull in need of expensive medical care.

Thanks Oakland A’s for Keeping Our Dogs Happy & Dry!
Oakland Animal Services would like to offer a Great Dane-sized thank you to the Oakland A’s for their donation of towels this week!
Our shelter animals will enjoy these towels for various activities for months to come. As you can see, we already put them to good use. All these pups (big and small) got some snuggle time in their green, white, and teal towels after their baths and grooming. Thank you for thinking of us! We take donations of new and gently used bath towels. And boy, do we use them. If you have donations to drop off, please bring them by during our open hours (see bottom of the page for details). There is a donation bin in the lobby. Alternatively, if you have a lot to donate, you can email oas@oaklandnet.com, so we can arrange a pickup. Thank you for your support!
You can see our Donations list for dropoffs here: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/how-to-help/wish-list/
