FOAS hiring full-time Development Coordinator
Friends of Oakland Animal Services (FOAS) seeks a strong fundraiser with a commitment to progressive animal welfare. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a small but growing organization and is able to help move the organization to its next level of excellence.
Honor an Icon for Animals on Her 100th Birthday
As you probably know, the world lost a beloved actor and animal advocate when Golden Girl Betty White passed away recently, just shy of what would have been her 100th birthday–today, January 17.
And by now you may also have heard about a national campaign to honor Betty on this day. Animal lovers across the nation are donating $5 or more to their local shelters, in celebration of White’s many decades of commitment to animal welfare.
Friends of Oakland Animal Services invites you to join us in this loving tribute to Betty–can you give $5 (or more!) to celebrate her lifetime of advocacy on this special day?
Even better, consider making a monthly gift of $5 or more! For just the cost of one coffee drink, or one gallon of gas (!) each month, you can help FOAS continue to build the steady foundation that will enable us to serve Oakland’s neediest animals for the next 100 years.

OAS provides veterinary care for 136 pets at December community clinic
Thanks to a generous grant from Petco Love, we were able to hold a community clinic at Verdese Carter Park this month. The clinic was open to the public, serving residents of East Oakland. The clinic was a tremendous success, with 136 pets receiving free medical care from our veterinary team.
Veterinary treatment included vaccinations, flea medication, microchips, and veterinary exams. In addition, pet food and supplies such as collars, leashes, harnesses, and tags were provided to pet guardians at no cost.
We are so grateful to Petco Love for their generous grant! We also certainly could not have done this without all the help from our amazing volunteers and staff. Thank you all so much!

Now, an anonymous donor has challenged us to raise $25,000 before the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve–and we’ll get an additional $25,000 for Oakland’s animals! It’s our largest matching gift challenge to date–and it means that the value of your year-end gift made by 11:59 pm on December 31st will be doubled.

Statement Regarding Severely Neglected Dog
On December 14, at 7:24 am, Oakland Animal Services (OAS) received a call regarding a dog that appeared to have been severely neglected. Our first officer arrived on the scene by 8:30 am and found a dog in dire condition. OAS seized the dog, and took it for emergency veterinary care, and an officer from OPD arrested the owner. OAS has initiated an investigation and will pursue appropriate remedies.
We appreciate that this situation caught people’s attention and want to address the limited facts we can share as well as the disinformation on social media. We share the community’s outrage at this horrible act of cruelty.
