For the month of August, OAS is offering free adoptions to help our long-term residents find homes. Bring your family and come visit! Standard adoption procedures apply. Animals who qualify for free adoptions include:

All adult cats (over one year old) such as Raya.

All chihuahuas, including Surfer.

Dogs who have been at the shelter for more than four weeks, like Triscuit.

Oakland residents adopting dogs over four months old must purchase a dog license at the time of adoption.

Cinnamon is a calm and friendly two-year-old calico. She loves to curl up next to you for affection. (ID#13326)

You’ll recognize Bonnie by her stunning blue coat and happy grin. She plays well with other dogs and would love to find her home soon. (ID#11888)

We have some special long-term rabbits at the shelter who are looking for homes. The adoption fee has been waived for these rabbits and they come with a fabulous gift basket full of herbivore goodies! Please bring all household members to meet your new companion.

First up is Sugar, who has been waiting at the shelter since August 2011 for his home. Being a white bunny with red eyes has left Sugar overlooked and unwanted. Bunnies are prey animals, and he is known to shy away at first. His new family will have to sit with him and be patient and he will soon find comfort in you. If you have a bunny at home that needs a friend, let’s set him/her up on a date with Sugar!

Next are Thelma and Louise, a mom and daughter pair. They love to race with each other and play hide and seek in cardboard boxes. Adopting a pair means they will keep each other company during the day when you are at work or school.

Come visit! Our friendly volunteers are happy to introduce you to these sweet bunnies and talk to you about rabbit care.

Boots – a dog that has been at the Shelter since May, 2012, was adopted yesterday!  Here he is before his adoption and then playing with his new girlfriend.

Happy Hound donates their grooming services to Oakland Animal Services each and every week to groom shelter dogs.  This an incredible gift because this service makes the dogs so much more adoptable and comfortable.  For example, today they groomed one of our dogs who was so matted that his ears were covered in fur which was hiding a severe ear infection.
