Help us spread the word about Maddie’s Adoptathon on June 9 and 10!

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

1) The funds earned during this two day event are critical for taking care of our shelter animals throughout the year. During last year’s Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon, OAS received $99,000 from Maddie’s Foundation. This donation actually exceeded the shelter’s operating budget from the city of Oakland for the year and was essential for keeping the shelter running.

2) We will get a huge number of homeless animals adopted! Last year, we found homes for 166 animals in two days!!!!

3) This event spreads the word about the importance of adopting shelter animals and what a wonderful, life-changing experience it can be.

HOW TO HELP GET THE WORD OUT:

Oakland Animal Services (OAS), a unit of the Oakland Police Department, will take part in the third Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon on Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, an event sponsored by animal foundation Maddie’s Fund. Throughout the weekend, dog and cat adoptions will be free to qualified homes—FREE—and, better yet, each successful adoption will earn the shelter a generous donation from Maddie’s Fund of $500 to $2,000.

“Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon is an exciting event, and we’re pleased to take part in it again,” OAS Director Megan Webb said. “The money the shelter is able to earn through the event makes all the difference to OAS. We handle upward of 7,000 animals a year here—and those monies go directly to animal care—food, veterinary care, and quality-of-life improvements for the animals.”

Individuals who are interested in adopting during the adoptathon can be “prescreened” Monday through Friday, June 4–8, during regular shelter hours to make the adoption process faster. Hours for Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon at Oakland Animal Services’ shelter will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 9, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 10. We’ve been chronicling Van Winkle’s story of recovery over the past year as he made it from his original state as a  “mummified dog” to happy, healthy love bug.  His adopters couldn’t be more thrilled with how adorable he is, and we think you’ll agree.  You can read his adoption storyhere.    His new family sent us these recent pictures of how well he’s doing.  We are so happy this kind gentle guy has such a wonderful new home.

Aki James, an Oakland Police Department employee, received her call to action after reading a story about animals rescued by Oakland Animal Services (OAS). As fate would have it, she ran into OAS Director Megan Webb just after having read the story, and, in talking about the animals at the shelter, Megan told her about our small-dog population and how so many of the Chihuahua mixes look similar. Aki offered to knit sweaters for the rescued animals waiting in the shelter for their chance at a new home.

“Individual sweaters could really help the dogs stand out to potential adopters,” Megan told Aki. And Aki was sold.

After speaking with Megan, Aki decided to take it upon herself (and her knitting group, City Stitchers, a knitting group made up of city of Oakland employees) to knit thirty sweaters for the small breed dogs at OAS.  A fellow knitter from City Stitchers, and Aki delivered thirty doggie sweaters to Oakland Animal Service on Valentine’s Day.    As OAS staff and volunteers brought out several small dogs to try on the sweaters, an impromptu fashion show was under way.

Aki told us that as she knits doggie sweaters, she thinks of the day when every adoptable dog will have a home. It is her dream for animal cruelty and over-breeding to come to an end.

“I dream, stitch by stitch, that my sweater will get each precious little dog adopted,” Aki said. “I am like Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams. I didn’t hear the magical voice though, but this is my Needle of Dreams. If we knit, they will come . . . to adopt dogs, that is.”

Katy is one of our longest term dogs at OAS. She’s everyone’s favorite goofy lovebug!
